Course Overview

Human evolution was shaped by periodic climate changes. Our success was the ability to cope with any kind of climate by adjusting our lifestyles accordingly. Equipped with this inbuilt adaptability, we conquered every habitat of the planet. However, approximately 11,000 years ago, the climate stabilised and civilisations emerged globally. Regular seasons enabled large-scale agriculture that could feed much greater numbers of people than hunting and gathering ever could. Since then, our population has continued to skyrocket and we are very much dependent on a stable climate – because our crops are dependent on it. In the last two centuries, and especially the last 30 years, we have kept pushing the system out of its delicate balance by emitting enormous quantities of fossil carbon into the atmosphere while simultaneously degrading crucial climate-regulating ecosystems. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of our current situation so that we can connect the dots of seemingly unrelated events and analyse the challenges – but also the opportunities and responsibilities – that the institution of ProCredit is facing.
