Course Overview
The domestication of fire is one of the biggest milestones in human development. Burning biomass to generate energy in the form of heat and light dates back so far that the first pyrotechnicians are not even considered to be member of our own species. While we today pride ourselves on having developed a highly sophisticated civilisation, our approach to solving the energy problem has remained largely unchanged: burn stuff. Instead of wood, it’s fossilised organic matter. This outdated method releases vast amounts of CO2 into our atmosphere, disturbing the delicate balance of our planet’s climate. Additionally, fossil fuels are not universally available, leading to geopolitical energy dynamics and vulnerability to price volatility and supply shortages in global markets. It is needless to say that our dominant energy production methods are unsustainable. Therefore, it is high time to reconsider our energy sources and find sustainable alternatives.
